My son is almost 3yrs and 4 months old. I feel like he understands more and more each day. But he wants to do things his way. Which is almost always the other way we expect him to do it. Practically like he is living in an upside-down world.
That’s one explanation for all of the “why” questions. It’s his way of understanding his world and turning it upside down into what we think the reality is. He will ask questions over and over again. And he will do that tirelessly. And when he doesn’t get an answer he will make one for himself. Aloud.
Don’t believe me? Do you know Why is the Earth round? If I don’t respond he will continue. Because … because it’s round. That will put a small smile on my face and also give me the energy to respond to more of his questions. Isn’t that a smart thing to get some attention?
Electronics are his last fascination. From changing toy batteries to the more dangerous plugging and unplugging of table lamps, toasters, and anything with a cable. The days when I don’t have to keep an eye on him still seem so far far away.
I have to be careful when watching tv. Until now he only cared for cartoons. Otherwise, it was as if the tv didn’t exist. Which was fine for me. Now I will catch him taking a peek at some of the movies I watch. While not much will phase me, can’t say the same for him.
He is bent on cleaning the world around him. When we are outside he will try to pick all kinds of dirt, bottle caps, or bags and take them to the dumpster. But he won’t lift a finger if I tell him to put his toys in their box.
On a happy note, if you want to have some fun with your kid, just buy a few balloons. There are tones of games you can play. You can kick them around, push them into the air, or his favorite: deflate and let them fly all over the place. While they make the greatest farts sounds. Don’t look at me like that. I’m sure the kid in you is having a laugh too.
What about you, what are some of the games you like to play with your kids?

I think he sees things differently, which isn’t a bad thing. We see messes inside and outside only as things which need to be cleaned up, but as adults we feel we only have the power and control to tidy up inside our homes, your little one is showing that if we each do a little something, we can work together to clean our environment.
As adults we don’t even try to clean the environment; it’s the sanitation worker’s job, it’s the government’s job. Your little person is demonstrating that we can each do our part.
When he doesn’t pick up his things in the house, is he modeling that behavior we show as adults, “it’s not my job, so I won’t do it”? That’s a purely philosophical question, but I see the parallels between how he interprets his world to how we as adults interpret our roles on this planet.

I’m sure he has good intentions and I try to praise him for them. But his safety is my main priority for him at this age.

I have two sons and I know exactly what you are talking about. But now they are adults and Parents themselves. So there are grand children also, they happen to be girls so a bit different but keeps the parents just busy as much 🙂
