I started my gym journey 3 months ago. Not gonna lie, it’s been hard for someone who’s been a stranger to this activity all my life. It’s been an uphill battle. The first month was cool, with new people, and new things, we started slow and learned the basics. The energy was high but as time passes you start to get a bit bored, maybe you get an accident or two and just think about throwing out the towel. You just have to push on.
There is a brotherhood among the guys in there. There is also a sisterhood but it’s not as obvious. The guys are really social and greet each other and joke around. It helps that more than half of them are trainers and regulars and almost everyone knows each other.
More than often you will hear them greeting and praising each other, “You’re Number one” or “How you doin’, my friend”, “Push it to the max”, “Make it(your muscles) burn”. My trainer often calls me “The young one” even though I’m one of the older ones.
I’ve noticed there are quite a few types of people that come to the gym. There are The Bros – 2 or 3 guys that almost always come together and train each other, are loud, and probably the heart of the party. There are also The Sisters, almost like the bros but a bit cuter. And not that loud. The mountain – I kid you not – if you’ve seen Game of Thrones, you know what I mean. Just that this one is one of the nicest guys around.
The Sirens, girls so fit they don’t need that much training. Sometimes I feel like they only come to get guys to look at them. There are also Casanovas that only start training when the sirens are around. The Foodies, the ones that come to the gym just so they can eat more and still remain in shape.
Me? I feel like a Padawan going around with my trainer, trying to do my best from what I see. I’ve always been the quiet type so this works fine for me.
I forgot about the ones that seem to have an orgasm when they train, I still have to find a name for them. Maybe you have a good one.
All in all, I started to see some results. My back is better than before, and my posture is fixing herself. I didn’t lose as much weight as I hoped but there are a lot of other benefits. My trainer always tells me that for that I should run more on the treadmill or go on the bicycle. And sweat until all my clothes are wet.
I think you need to find what works for you. While he did give me some pointers on what to eat, I find that fasting works better for me. Almost forgot, my wife finds me a lot more attractive. Yeah, you know what that means…
We’ll have to see, I hope to have better results 3 months from now on. If you liked this story and want to read more about my journey into the gym check my first article: https://raduh.home.blog/2022/04/02/how-to-get-back-to-the-gym/
And if you get a chance, check out my book.
Side by side is a book about the first years of parenting. Both the beauty and the hidden side of parenting. The long nights and troubled days. Parents who try and fail and then try again. And how your little one puts a smile on
As someone who’s tried working out in gyms and met failure, I really love how you brought the ‘types’ to life. The sirens and casanovas gave me a chuckle! Keep up the good work & the habit. It will be worth it!

I’ve also tried before and stoped after a few sessions. Now I’m trying again with a trainer. So far so good. Thanks for the kind words.
