Movie Review: The Witcher

Oh, Witcher…nostalgia is your name. I played the games a long long time ago and they decided to make a show about it. And they were right to do so. While season 1 was released in 2019, season 2 appeared only a few days ago.

It amazes me how stories are born and make their way into books. But most of us only get to experience the story once it morphs into games. And then movies get the best from books and games.

The first season was a bit confusing as they tried to tell the stories in an original way with different timelines. That might not have worked too well for them as not everybody enjoyed it. But the true fans were fine with it.

I usually tell my brother about the shows I watch and like. And we usually have the same tastes. But for this one, he didn’t make it past the trailer. So I guess it isn’t for everybody.

I remember the first time I heard the word witcher and was trying to understand the concept. Is he a male witch? Is he a witch hunter? It took me a while to learn the lore but I loved it in the end.

The second season is more of a Father story and it does resemble a bit of the Mandalorian show. You still get to see how a day/night in the life of a witcher unfolds. But it’s mostly about the protective nature of a father/daughter relation.

Pros: Good story, great acting, fantastic cinematography, entertaining, nostalgia

Cons: Slow pace at some points, some characters are not convincing

I don’t want to spoil too much about the show so I’ll just say that I loved it. I’m not gonna give it a 10/10 but a 9/10 since it had some things that didn’t quite sit right with me.

But it’s got everything in there: monsters, fights, humor, magic, politics and so much more. And Superman Henry Cavill himself as the Witcher. And you can really feel he’s been playing the games and makes justice to the witcher.

  1. “It amazes me how stories are born and make their way into books.” Simply profound!

I liked the second season way better than the first one. S1 bordered on slapstick at times and that really got on my nerves. Loved the S2 adaptation of the story line. It made for a much better viewing experience.

I was also intrigued by the name “Witcher”.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Much appreciated.
    Best wishes, Harshi
